Myth #1: "Age checks are just for physical shops"

You'd think that after all these years, the idea that online stores skip age checks would have died. It hasn't. Some folks still believe that if you buy a vape on the internet, nobody's going to ask for ID. That's not true.

In the UK, online sellers of nicotine products are legally required to verify you're 18 or over—not just at checkout, but often again when the parcel arrives. So, if you're expecting a vape to land on your doorstep without you proving your age, you're in for a surprise. A courier might ask to see your ID before handing over the package. That's a good thing, even if it feels like a hassle.

One thing to note: if a website doesn't ask for any age verification, that's a red flag. It's likely not following the law, which means you might be dealing with a dodgy seller. Better to move on to a reputable shop.

Myth #2: "A photo ID is always enough"

Here's a common one: people think that flashing any ID with a date of birth will pass any check. In reality, it's not that simple. Many retailers use digital age verification systems that cross-check your details against official databases, like electoral roll or credit records. They might not even ask for a physical ID if the system confirms your age.

Other times, they'll scan your ID with a special device that reads the chip or barcode. That's because a simple glance at a card isn't reliable—photos can be doctored, and fake IDs are more common than you'd think.

So, don't be offended if a cashier asks for a second piece of ID or runs your card through a scanner. They're just doing their job to stay legal. It's not about doubting you personally.

Myth #3: "If I look over 18, I won't be asked"

This one is partly true but also a trap. Yes, the law allows for "Challenge 25" policies—if someone looks under 25, they must show ID. But that doesn't mean if you look older, you'll breeze through. Retailers can ask anyone for ID if they have any doubt. And online, it's a blanket policy: everyone gets checked, regardless of how old they look.

Why? Because the penalties for selling to a minor are severe—fines, possible imprisonment, and losing the right to sell vapes altogether. It's not worth the risk for a shop, so they'll err on the side of caution.

If you're an adult who's used to buying vapes, just carry your ID when you shop. It saves everyone time.

What actually helps in real use

So, what should you, as an adult consumer, actually do? A few things.

First, when buying online, expect to go through an age check. It might be a simple birth date entry, but more likely it'll be a verification service that asks for your name and address. Some even ask for a photo of your ID. That's normal.

Second, when you're at a physical store, have your ID ready. Don't wait to be asked. It makes the process smoother and shows you're a responsible buyer.

Third, if you're buying for someone else, make sure they're of legal age. It's on you, not just the shop.

And if you ever feel a seller is being too lax about age checks, you can report them to your local trading standards. That helps keep the whole industry honest.

How to sanity-check marketing claims

You'll see ads or websites that claim something like "No age verification needed!" or "Buy without ID!" That's a huge warning sign. Legitimate sellers don't advertise that because it's illegal. They might say "Age verification required" or "We take age checks seriously." That's what you want to see.

Another red flag is a price that seems too good to be true. Often, that means the product is counterfeit or they're cutting corners on safety. Stick to known brands and reputable shops.

Also, beware of sellers who ask for unnecessary personal info, like your full financial details, just for age verification. Official systems only need your name, DOB, and maybe address. Anything more is suspicious.

Reality check

• In the UK, selling nicotine vaping products to under-18s is illegal, and age verification is a legal requirement for both physical and online sales. Many myths circulate about what counts as proper verification—like assuming an ID with a photo is enough or that self-declaration suffices. Retailers must use government-approved methods, such as ID scanning or digital age verification services, and consumers should be aware that responsible sellers will always check.
• Age verification for nicotine devices in the UK is a legal must, not a suggestion, for both stores and online shops.
• A photo ID alone isn't always enough; retailers often use digital checks or ID scanning for higher confidence.
• Buyers should expect to prove age at delivery—refusing that is a red flag for a dodgy seller.
