Part map at a glance

If you've ever looked at a cold brew setup and felt like everyone else knows a secret you don't, you're not alone. Cold brew looks dead simple—coffee, water, time—but the details decide whether your jar tastes like chocolatey sunshine or bitter regret. Here's the map of what actually matters.

• Coffee: the star. Use a medium roast like RAMI's. It's forgiving and brings out natural sweetness.
• Grind: coarse. Think breadcrumbs, not sand. Fine grounds turn cold brew muddy and bitter.
• Water: cold or room temperature. Filtered water helps, but tap is fine if it tastes good.
• Ratio: the dial. More coffee = stronger concentrate. Less = ready-to-drink.
• Time: patience. 18 hours is the sweet spot.
• Filtration: the cleanup. Twice filtering gives you that clear, clean cup.

The part people overlook

Everyone obsesses over the beans and the ratio, but the part that makes or breaks your cold brew is the grind size. You'd be surprised how many counter conversations start with "Why is my cold brew bitter?" and the answer is always the same: grind too fine.

When you steep coffee in cold water, extraction happens slowly. Fine grounds release too much too fast, and you get harsh, over-extracted flavors. Coarse grounds release gently, leaving you with a smooth, sweet concentrate.

A quick test: pinch your grounds. They should feel like rough sand, not powder. If you're using a blade grinder, pulse in short bursts to avoid turning half your beans to dust. Even a cheap burr grinder is a huge upgrade if you're serious about cold brew.

The part that fails first

The first thing to go wrong? The steep time. People either forget about it and let it sit for two days, or they try to rush it in 6 hours. Both give you a subpar jar.

Why does time matter? Too short, and you get a weak, sour brew—the coffee hasn't yielded its goodness yet. Too long, and you start pulling out bitter compounds that were better left behind.

Here's your window: 18 hours at room temperature is the sweet spot for most concentrates. If you're in a hurry, 12 hours will work, but it'll be a bit less smooth. And if you forget it? Don't panic. If it's been 24 hours, taste it. If it's not bitter, it's fine. If it is, you've learned your lesson.

How parts interact

Cold brew is a system, and each part affects the others. Change one thing, and you shift the whole balance.

• Grind + Time: A coarser grind can take a bit longer, but you'll rarely go wrong with 18 hours. If you ground finer than you thought, cut the time to 14 hours.
• Ratio + Strength: A 1:5 ratio gives you a syrupy concentrate that you can dilute with water or milk. A 1:15 ratio gives you a ready-to-drink glass. Start with 1:8 and adjust from there.
• Water + Flavor: Hard water with lots of minerals can dull the coffee. If your tap tastes strong, use filtered water.
• Filtration + Mouthfeel: The second filter isn't just for looks. It removes the silt that makes cold brew gritty on the tongue.

Think of it like a recipe: you're balancing extraction, strength, and clarity. Nail those three, and you'll be the person who brings the best cold brew to the picnic.

What to inspect weekly

Once you've dialed in your brew, keep it consistent with a quick weekly check.

• Grinder: Clean out stale grounds and oil. A quick brush or a wipe keeps your grinder tasting fresh.
• Water: If your cold brew has been tasting flat, try a different water source. Filtered water is a cheap fix.
• Coffee freshness: Buy beans in small batches. Coffee goes stale about two weeks after roasting. If your brew tastes dusty, your beans are old.
• Your taste buds: Taste your cold brew plain before adding milk or sugar. You'll notice shifts in flavor that tell you when to adjust your process.

Remember, cold brew is forgiving. You're not chasing perfection—you're chasing what makes you look forward to that first sip in the morning. With RAMI Coffee and a little attention to the anatomy, you'll get there.

Parts questions

Q: What is the best coffee-to-water ratio for cold brew?

For a concentrate, start with 1:8 (coffee to water by weight). If you prefer a ready-to-drink strength, use 1:15. Adjust after your first batch—it's all about taste.

Q: How long should I steep cold brew?

Aim for 18 hours at room temperature. Steeping longer than 24 hours can pull out bitter compounds. If you're in a hurry, 12 hours works but will be slightly less smooth.

Q: Why is my cold brew bitter?

Bitterness usually means over-extraction. Try a coarser grind, shorten the steep time, or lower the water temperature (use cold water, not warm). Also, make sure you're not using a dark roast if you prefer less bite.

Q: Can I use any coffee for cold brew?

Yes, but medium roasts like RAMI's are forgiving and balanced. Light roasts can taste too acidic, and dark roasts can get overly bitter. Stick with medium for your first batches.

Anatomy recap

• Cold brew success hinges on four variables: coffee-to-water ratio, grind size, steep time, and filtration. With RAMI Coffee's medium roast, a 1:8 ratio, coarse grind, and 18-hour steep at room temperature yields a smooth, concentrated base. Always filter twice for clarity and adjust to taste.
• Use a 1:8 coffee-to-water ratio for a concentrate; adjust to 1:5 for stronger or 1:10 for lighter.
• Grind coarse—like breadcrumbs—to avoid over-extraction and bitterness.
• Steep 18 hours at room temperature; longer isn't always better.
• Filter twice: once through a sieve, then through a coffee filter or cloth.
• Taste and adjust: if bitter, reduce steep time; if sour, grind finer.
