E-liquid doesn't spoil like milk. It doesn't grow mold. It doesn't become toxic. The best-before date — typically 18-24 months from manufacture — is about flavor degradation, not safety.

Nicotine oxidizes over time. That's the chemical process that turns e-liquid darker and gives it a peppery taste. Oxidized nicotine is less potent (you'll feel less of a hit) and tastes worse, but it's not harmful. It's the same thing that happens to a bottle of wine left open too long.

Flavor molecules also degrade. Fruit flavors fade fastest — a strawberry juice at 2 years old will taste like vaguely sweet nothing. Tobacco and custard flavors actually improve with age for the first 12 months, then slowly decline.

Storage matters more than the date. Keep your juice in a cool, dark place. Heat and UV light accelerate nicotine oxidation. A bottle stored in a drawer at room temperature will last a year past its best-before date. A bottle left on a sunny windowsill will be trash in two months.

If your juice is dark brown, smells peppery, and has separated into layers, it's past its prime. You can still vape it. It won't hurt you. But it won't taste good, and the nicotine hit will be weak.
