Dolly Parton died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Nashville. She was 80. By evening, President Donald Trump had ordered United States flags lowered through sunset on September 1. In the days since, the country has been replaying one voice more than any other — Whitney Houston singing I Will Always Love You. Houston did not write that song. Parton did, in 1973, on a Tuesday in a Nashville studio when she was still young enough to be underestimated and already stubborn enough to outlast it.

Her publicist, Marcel Pariseau, said she died at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center after a brief battle with cancer, surrounded by family. The type of cancer was not named. She was born Dolly Rebecca Parton on January 19, 1946, in Sevier County, Tennessee, the fourth of twelve children in a one-room cabin so poor her father paid the doctor who delivered her with a bag of cornmeal. She left for Nashville at eighteen with a guitar, a pile of songs, and the kind of ambition that sounds naive until it isn’t.

At WINDBAR, this week lands differently than it lands on a playlist. We work with U.S. vape brand founders who are trying to turn a product idea into a factory-ready plan — capability briefs, supplier matching, sampling, compliance screening, first production, ongoing support. Most of them will never be famous. They share something with Parton anyway: they are building under their own name, in an industry full of louder channels that would happily take the credit if you let them.

From a cabin to a county

Parton’s career is often told as a fairy tale because the ending is so bright. The middle is work. She wrote Jolene on the same day she wrote I Will Always Love You, two songs that ask opposite questions and answer them with the same clarity. She wrote Coat of Many Colors about poverty without begging for pity. She wrote 9 to 5 about office life and made it funny enough to sing in a car and sharp enough to sting in a meeting. She built Dollywood in the county she came from, so tourists who wanted Dolly had to come to Sevier County, not the other way around.

That choice — build at home, build for decades, build something that still pays when the spotlight moves — is the part WINDBAR keeps returning to this week. A brand is not a launch week. It is the brief you can still defend when the factory asks for a shortcut, when the distributor wants your box to look like theirs, when a partner offers reach if you will blur the line on who owns the spec. We help U.S. teams write those lines down before the sample run, because Parton proved what every founder learns eventually: if you do not own the story in writing, someone else will own the version people remember.

During the pandemic she put a million dollars toward vaccine research. Through Imagination Library she sent books until more than two hundred million arrived in children’s hands. She was funny on talk shows and exacting in business meetings. She wore rhinestones and read spreadsheets. She refused to be sorted into one adjective, and that refusal is itself a kind of craft.

What half-staff actually marks

Trump’s order, as reported, covers the White House, federal buildings and grounds, military posts, naval stations, federal vessels, and U.S. facilities abroad, beginning at 6:00 p.m. on August 25 through sunset on September 1, 2026. Tennessee lowered state flags in the same window. Half-staff is a public way of saying: this person belonged to more of the country than a chart position. It does not tell you which song to play. It asks you to look up from the feed for a moment and notice who did the work underneath the noise.

WINDBAR is in that work every day — not on a stage, but in capability briefs, factory shortlists, QC checkpoints, and the slow translation of “we want this device” into language a Shenzhen line can execute without guessing. The founders we talk to are not mourning a celebrity. They are still quoting lead times, still waiting on lab results, still deciding whether next quarter’s SKU deserves their name on it. Parton’s week reminds them — and us — that the name on the work is the whole game.

The song in the room

Houston’s 1992 recording, from The Bodyguard, is the version most Americans can hum. Parton’s original went to No. 1 on the country chart in 1974. Kevin Costner asked to use the song for the film. Parton said yes. Houston sang it and the world changed volume. Parton remained the writer. That distinction is easy to lose when grief turns every tribute into a montage, which is why the second note in this series stays with the credit alone: what happens when the louder channel becomes the only channel people can name.

Elvis Presley wanted to record the song. Published accounts say Colonel Tom Parker asked for half the publishing. Parton said no. The session did not happen. She later joked that Houston’s success paid her enough to buy Graceland. The joke had a spine. Short-term reach is expensive when you pay with ownership.

After September 1

The flags go back up on a calendar. The songs do not go anywhere. The third note in this series is about what operators should do with a week like this if they are still building for October: half-staff through September 1, and the work that outlasts the pause.

WINDBAR helps U.S. vape brands match product goals with vetted China factory resources — from first conversation to first order and beyond. If you are planning hardware for the next season and want a partner who puts your requirements in writing before anyone touches a line, start here. The community on windbar.ai is where operators already on this site compare notes. Adults 21 and older.
