Why battery runtime is a guessing game for most shop owners

Ask five customers how long their vape lasts, and you'll get five different answers. Some say all day, others say a few hours. The difference isn't magic—it's math. But most shop owners don't have time to break out a calculator for every sale. That's why we built the Vape Battery Calculator. It turns a confusing spec sheet into a number you can actually use.

Setup: What you need to know before you calculate

Before you can predict runtime, you need three numbers:

• Battery capacity in milliampere-hours (mAh). This tells you how much charge the battery holds. A higher number means more stored energy.
• Power draw in watts (W). This is how fast the device uses energy. Higher wattage = faster drain.
• Voltage in volts (V). Most regulated mods use a nominal voltage around 3.7V, but check the spec sheet.

If you're looking at a device like the VERTEX-VISTA or LINQ-PRO, the spec sheet usually lists the mAh. For the power draw, check the wattage range. If it's adjustable, use the average you expect your customer to use.

First-run checks: Verify your numbers

• Don't trust the name. A product called "2000mAh" might actually be 1800mAh. Check the manual or the battery itself.
• Account for efficiency. No battery converts 100% of its stored energy into vapor. Most lose 10–20% to heat. For a conservative estimate, multiply your result by 0.85.
• Consider vaping habits. Runtime is continuous use. If your customer takes a 3-second puff every 5 minutes, multiply the continuous runtime by 20 to get a realistic “all day” number.

Teardown: The simple math behind battery life

Here's the formula in plain English:

1. Convert mAh to watt-hours: (mAh × V) ÷ 1000
2. Divide by power draw in watts: watt-hours ÷ W = hours of continuous use
3. Adjust for efficiency (optional): multiply by 0.85

Example: A 3000mAh battery at 3.7V has 11.1 watt-hours. At 20W, that's 0.55 hours of continuous use—about 33 minutes. If your customer vapes for 3 seconds every minute, that's roughly 11 hours of casual use.

That's the logic our calculator automates. Instead of doing this for every device, plug in the numbers and get the answer instantly.

Storage: How to keep batteries healthy for longer runtime

• Store at 40–80% charge if you're not using the device for a while. Full charge or empty puts stress on the battery.
• Keep it cool. Heat is the enemy of lithium-ion batteries. Don't leave devices in a hot car or near a radiator.
• Avoid freezing. Cold temps can temporarily reduce capacity. If a device feels sluggish in winter, let it warm to room temperature before use.
• Check for swelling. If a battery or device looks puffy, stop using it and dispose of it properly.

Next-use prep: What to tell your customers

When a customer asks, "How long will this last?" here's a quick script:

"It depends on how you vape. If you're at 20W and take normal puffs, this battery should last about [X] hours. For a heavier user, expect less."

Use the calculator to give a specific number, and you'll set expectations right—fewer returns, more trust.
