Why fit charts fail (and what to do instead)

Fit charts aren't lying, but they're not the whole story. They give you flat measurements of the garment, not how it drapes on a body. Two people with the same chest size can wear the same tee completely differently. So the chart is a baseline, not a guarantee.

When you're buying for yourself, you can try it on and exchange if needed. But for a gift, you don't have that luxury. You need to be more careful from the start. The trick is to use the chart as a reference, not a verdict.

What to actually measure (and how)

Grab a tee the recipient wears often and lay it flat. Measure these two spots:

• Chest: 1 inch below the armpit, across the width.
• Length: from the top of the shoulder seam to the bottom hem.

Double the chest measurement to get the full circumference. Compare that to the Windbar chart's chest measurement. Now do the same for length. If the numbers match, you're golden. If they're off by more than an inch, adjust your size choice accordingly.

The two measurements that matter most

Chest and length are the two you can't ignore. Chest determines how snug or loose the tee feels across the shoulders and torso. Length dictates where the hem hits—on the hip, below it, or way past. Sleeve length and shoulder width matter, but they're secondary for most tees.

If you're between sizes, think about how the recipient likes to wear tees. Do they prefer a fitted look or a relaxed one? For a gift, err on the side of roomier. A slightly loose tee is more forgiving than a tight one.

How fabric and washing change the fit

Cotton shrinks. That's a fact. Most tees lose 3–5% of their length and width on the first wash, especially if you dry them on high heat. Windbar tees are no exception unless the fabric is pre-shrunk. The fit chart doesn't account for that.

So if you're buying a gift, factor in shrinkage. If the chart measurements are already snug on the recipient, size up. If they're roomy, you can stick with the chart size. When in doubt, size up—it's easier to take in than let out.

Do's and don'ts for gift sizing

Do

• Measure a tee the recipient already owns and compare.
• Check the fabric content and care instructions for shrinkage clues.
• Size up when the recipient is between sizes or you're unsure.

Don't

• Rely on the fit chart alone.
• Assume the recipient's usual size in another brand will match.
• Forget to check the return policy in case the size is wrong.

When to size up, down, or stick with the chart

Size up if the recipient prefers a relaxed fit, is between sizes, or you're buying cotton that might shrink. Size down only if they like a slim, tailored look and the chart measurements are already generous. Stick with the chart if the measurements match a tee they already wear comfortably.

For a gift, the default should be size up. It's the safer choice. A slightly big tee is easier to live with than a slightly small one. And if it's too big, you can always exchange.

The bottom line for hassle-free gifting

The fit chart is a tool, not a promise. Pair it with a quick measurement of a tee the recipient owns, and you'll avoid most sizing mistakes. Factor in shrinkage, and you'll avoid the rest. When in doubt, size up. That's the whole playbook.

If you're still unsure, jump into the Windbar community and ask how other shoppers found the fit. Real-world feedback beats a chart every time.

Ladder

• Windbar's fit chart is a starting point, not a promise. To avoid gift-size fails, measure a similar tee the recipient wears, compare it to the chart, and account for fabric shrinkage. Sizing up is the safest default for gift purchases, as most buyers prefer a slightly looser fit.
• Always compare the fit chart measurements to a tee the recipient already owns.
• Chest and length are the two measurements that matter most.
• When in doubt, size up—it's easier to take in than let out.
