Start with the basics

Okay, so your summer was busy, and your vape sat in a drawer or a bag for months. When you finally pick it up, you might be tempted to take a huge drag and expect the same flavor you remember. Don't. After a long break, the coil is likely dry, and the e-liquid might have settled. The first hits can be harsh or even taste burnt if you pull too hard.

Here's what to do: take a few short, gentle puffs—not full inhales, just enough to pull air through. This helps draw fresh liquid into the wick. Wait about 30 seconds between puffs. If the taste is still off, set it down for five to ten minutes and let the coil fully saturate. This simple habit prevents that awful dry hit.

Check for leaks and damage

Before you get into a rhythm, give your device a quick once-over. Look at the mouthpiece, the sides, and the bottom. If you see any sticky residue or drops of liquid, wipe it off with a dry cloth. Leaks can happen when a device is stored at extreme temperatures or left on its side for a long time. If you notice cracks in the plastic, or if the device feels sticky even after cleaning, it's safer to stop using it and grab a new one.

Also, check the airflow holes. Dust and lint can collect there, blocking airflow and making your hits feel tight. A quick blow through the mouthpiece usually clears it.

Store it right next time

Now that you're back in the swing, let's talk about preventing this routine next time. The biggest mistake people make is leaving a disposable vape in a hot car or direct sunlight. Heat makes the e-liquid thin out, which can cause leaking. It can also stress the battery, which isn't great for longevity.

Instead, store your device in a cool, dry place. A drawer or a small pouch works fine. If you know you're not going to use it for a while, it's better to keep it in a ziplock bag to keep out dust and moisture. And always store it upright—this keeps the liquid where it belongs, away from the mouthpiece.

When it's time to let go

Here's the honest truth: not every device survives a long break. If your vape shows any of these signs, it's time to retire it:

• The battery is completely dead and won't charge.
• The e-liquid has turned dark or smells strange.
• You see visible cracks or the device feels hot when you use it.
• The flavor is permanently burnt, no matter how long you wait.

Disposable vapes are made for convenience, not eternal life. If you're getting back into the habit and your old device is past its prime, consider a fresh one. It's a small price for the experience you're after.

Quick tips for the first week back

• Start light: Your tolerance might have dropped, so take smaller puffs than you remember.
• Stay hydrated: Vaping can dry your mouth, and after a break, your body needs a moment to adjust.
• Keep it upright: Whether you're at a desk or in a car, set it down standing up. It reduces leaks and keeps the coil happy.

You don't need a PhD in vaping to get back into it. Just a little patience and a few good habits. And if you ever want to see what other vapers are doing after their own breaks, the Windbar community is full of practical advice.
