The "vaping is cheaper" claim has been around for a decade. Most people accept it on faith. Few people actually run the numbers. So we ran them. The results are starker than most vapers realize.

The average US smoker consumes 11 cigarettes per day. That is a pack every two days. At $8.50 per pack — the 2026 US average — that is $1,551 per year. Eleven cigarettes. Per day. Not even a heavy smoker.

A refillable pod vaper using 10ml of 50/50 liquid per week spends roughly $5 on liquid and $4 on a replacement pod. Total: $9 per week. Add a $30 device amortized over 12 months. The annual total: $522. That is $1,029 less. Per year.

The sub-ohm vaper using 60ml of liquid per week spends more. A 50ml shortfill at $14 plus a nicotine shot at $3, with a new coil every two weeks at $4 each. Total: $25 per week. Annual: $1,300. Still $251 cheaper than smoking.

Here is the part nobody talks about: the device cost is almost irrelevant. Even a $80 premium pod kit, amortized over a year, adds $7 per month. The liquid is the cost driver. Always.

The tax question is worth watching. The UK government has discussed a vaping products levy multiple times. If it passes at the proposed rate of $1-4 per 10ml, the annual cost for a sub-ohm vaper jumps by $400-1,200. Still cheaper than smoking. But the gap narrows fast.

In 2026, vaping is unequivocally cheaper than smoking. The only question is whether the government lets it stay that way. This content is intended for adults 21 years of age or older.
