You packed your vape in your checked luggage. The TSA agent pulled it out. Now you are standing at the gate with a confiscation notice and a very bad start to your trip. This happens every single day. And it is entirely avoidable.

The rule is simple and absolute: vapes go in your carry-on. Never in checked luggage. The reason is lithium-ion batteries. The FAA and the Civil Aviation Authority both classify vape batteries as a fire risk. Checked luggage goes into the cargo hold where nobody can access it if a battery overheats. Carry-on luggage stays in the cabin where the crew can respond. That is the logic. It does not matter whether you agree with it. It is the rule, and it is enforced.

TSA guidelines state that vapes and e-cigarettes must be in carry-on bags. The FAA says the same thing. Most international aviation authorities have identical policies. If you put a vape in checked luggage and it gets flagged by the scanner, security will open your bag. They will remove the device. You will not get it back. You may also get a fine depending on the jurisdiction.

Liquid rules are the second trap. Vape liquid is subject to the same 100ml limit as all other liquids in carry-on. A 10ml bottle of liquid is fine. A 60ml bottle is not. Put large bottles in checked luggage. Put small bottles in your carry-on liquids bag. Pods and pre-filled cartridges count as liquids. Pack them in the clear bag with your toiletries. If you have a tank attached to a device, empty it before security. The residual liquid in a tank will not trigger the 100ml rule, but a full tank might. Why risk it?

International travel adds another layer. Some countries have outright bans on vape products. Thailand, Singapore, India, Brazil, and several Middle Eastern countries prohibit vapes entirely. Possession can result in confiscation, fines, or worse. Check the laws of your destination before you fly. Do not assume that because you bought it legally at home, it is legal abroad. It is not.

Battery safety is the final piece. Disconnect the pod or tank from the battery before packing. If the device has a fire button, lock it or turn it off. If it is draw-activated, store it in a case to prevent accidental activation from pressure changes during the flight. A vape firing inside your bag at 35,000 feet is not a situation you want to deal with.

Carry-on only. Small liquids. Check local laws. Disconnect the battery. Do these four things and your vape arrives with you. Skip one, and you might not.
