Three myths dominate the vaping conversation. They're repeated by news outlets, shared on social media, and cited by policymakers. All three are wrong. Here's the truth.

Myth 1: Vaping causes popcorn lung. Popcorn lung (bronchiolitis obliterans) is caused by inhaling diacetyl, a chemical used in microwave popcorn factories. Diacetyl was found in some e-liquids in 2015. The industry removed it. UK and EU regulations ban diacetyl in e-liquid. There has never been a single case of popcorn lung linked to vaping. The myth persists because it's a scary-sounding name.

Myth 2: Vape juice contains antifreeze. Propylene glycol is used in antifreeze — the non-toxic kind used in food processing equipment and RV plumbing. It's also used in asthma inhalers, toothpaste, IV medications, and baby wipes. It's not the same chemical as ethylene glycol, which is the toxic antifreeze in your car. The conflation is deliberate and dishonest.

Myth 3: Vaping produces formaldehyde. A 2015 study found formaldehyde in vape aerosol at levels comparable to cigarettes. The study burned the coil at 5 volts on a device designed for 3.3 volts. At normal operating temperatures, formaldehyde levels are negligible. The "formaldehyde" study is the most cited and most debunked piece of vaping research in history.

The UK's public health authorities — not vape companies, not advocacy groups — have consistently cited the estimate that vaping is around 95% less harmful than smoking, a figure that traces back to a 2015 expert-panel review and has been reaffirmed, though not precisely re-measured, in subsequent evidence reviews. Some researchers have challenged the figure's evidentiary basis, but no major review has reversed the underlying direction: every serious body that has looked at this, including the Royal College of Physicians, has concluded vaping carries only a fraction of smoking's risk. The debate among scientists is about the exact number, not whether vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking.
