There are device problems you can troubleshoot. And there are device problems where you put the thing down, walk away, and do not touch it again.

This is the second list. The non-negotiable one.

Most people hesitate. They think "maybe it's fine." They think "it's probably nothing." Here is the math: a single 18650 lithium-ion cell in thermal runaway reaches 500 degrees Celsius in under 3 seconds. The time between "that's weird" and "that's a fire" is measured in heartbeats. Hesitation is not caution. It is a gamble.

Here is the non-negotiable list. If any of these apply, stop using the device immediately. Not "after this charge." Not "when I get home." Right now.

1. The battery is swollen. You can see it. The device body has a gap that wasn't there yesterday. The panels don't sit flush. The battery door is hard to close. Swelling means the internal chemistry is producing gas. That gas is pressure. That pressure is looking for an exit. Do not charge it. Do not use it. Recycle it at a battery disposal point.

2. The device is making a hissing sound while not in use. A hissing sound from a device that is not being fired means the auto-draw sensor or fire button has failed in the closed position. The coil is heating continuously. It will overheat. It will burn the cotton. It will eventually vent the battery. Remove the pod or tank immediately. If the sound continues, the battery is internally shorting. Get it outside. Put it on concrete. Wait.

3. The device emitted smoke — not vapor — from the charging port or body. Vapor comes from the mouthpiece. Smoke comes from the electronics. If you see smoke from anywhere other than the drip tip, the internal components are burning. A MOSFET has failed. A capacitor has shorted. Something is on fire inside the chassis. Do not try to open it. Do not try to charge it. It is done.

4. The device has been submerged in water — even briefly. A vape dropped in a sink, a puddle, or a toilet is not salvageable by putting it in rice. Water inside a lithium-ion device creates short circuits across the battery management system. The device may appear to work after drying. It may work for a week. Then the internal corrosion hits a contact. Then it shorts. Then you have a problem you cannot see coming. Replace it.

5. The device has a cracked or dented chassis near the battery compartment. A dent in the battery tube or a crack in the chassis near the cell is structural damage. It means the battery has been compressed. A compressed lithium-ion cell is a time bomb. The internal separator layer may be damaged. You cannot see it. You cannot test for it. You can only wait for it to fail. Don't wait.

6. The device was purchased from an unverified source and anything — anything — feels wrong. If the price was too good. If the packaging looks slightly off. If the authenticity check failed. If the weight feels different from a known genuine unit. Counterfeit devices use counterfeit batteries. Counterfeit batteries have no thermal protection. No pressure vents. No quality control. They are not "cheap alternatives." They are hazards.

The takeaway: Six conditions. Zero exceptions. When you see any of them, you stop. The device is not worth more than your safety. The $40 replacement cost is not worth more than your kitchen counter, your car seat, or your hand. When in doubt, throw it out. This content is intended for adults 21 years of age or older.
