Purpose

This guide is for anyone using an open pod kit during their daily commute and noticing a burnt, harsh taste. The goal is to help you diagnose the cause and fix it without needing to be a technician. We'll keep it practical—no opening the device or messing with wires. If the fix doesn't work, you'll know when to replace parts or retire the kit.

Inputs you need

Before you start, gather a few things. You'll need your pod kit, the e-liquid you're using, and a clean, dry cloth. A spare coil or pod is handy if you suspect the current one is done. Also, check your device's manual or settings—do you know if your wattage is adjustable? Most open pod kits have fixed wattage, but some allow tweaks. Write down the current setting if you can.

Procedure

Let's walk through this step by step. Try these in order—most fixes are quick.

1. Check the juice level.

If your pod is low on e-liquid, the wick isn't getting enough juice. Top it off. If you're on the go, that's often the simplest fix. A dry wick burns fast.

2. Let the pod sit after filling.

If you just refilled, don't vape immediately. The wick needs time to soak. Wait at least 5 minutes—10 is better. This is the #1 cause of burnt taste right after a refill.

3. Lower the wattage (if you can).

If your device lets you adjust wattage, turn it down by a few watts. High power can scorch the wick before it has time to wick enough juice. Many commuters run their kits at max wattage for a stronger hit—that can backfire.

4. Take shorter draws.

Long, slow draws can overheat the coil. On a commute, you might be hitting it more often, which doesn't give the wick a break. Take shorter puffs and give it a few seconds between hits.

5. Prime new coils.

If you recently replaced the coil, did you prime it? That means letting juice soak into the wick before you vape. Put a drop on the exposed cotton, then fill the pod and wait. Skipping this step is a classic burnt taste trigger.

6. Check for a burnt coil.

If you've tried all the above and it still tastes burnt, the coil is likely fried. Sometimes you can't see it, but you'll know from the taste and reduced vapor. In that case, replace the coil or the entire pod.

Outputs / success criteria

After going through these steps, the burnt taste should be gone or at least noticeably better. You want a clean, smooth draw that doesn't hurt your throat. If you replaced the coil, the new one should taste fresh after a few puffs. Your device should feel consistent throughout your commute—no sudden harsh hits.

If you have an adjustable wattage, note the setting that worked. For example, if you were at 25W and 20W solved it, remember that. If you're using a fixed-wattage device like the LINQ-SLIM, you can't tweak power, so focus on wicking and timing.

Exceptions

Some situations are beyond a quick fix. Here's when to stop and replace or retire:

• Persistent burnt taste after a new coil: If a fresh coil still tastes burnt, the device itself might have a problem. Check the airflow—if it's blocked, you might be pulling too hard.
• Leaking or spitting: That's a different issue, but if it happens alongside burnt taste, your coil is likely misaligned or the pod is damaged.
• Device overheating: If the kit gets hot to the touch, stop using it. Let it cool down, and if it happens again, it's time to retire it.
• Physical damage: Cracks, loose parts, or a battery that doesn't hold charge—don't risk it. Dispose of the device properly.

Remember, never try to open the pod or modify the coil. It's not safe, and it voids any warranty. If you're unsure, check the manufacturer's guidance or reach out to support.

One more thing: if you're using a high-VG liquid (thicker), it might not wick well in a small pod, causing dry hits. Try a thinner liquid (more PG) if you keep hitting this problem.

That's it. For most daily commuters, the fix is simple: give the wick time to soak, watch your power, and don't rush. If it still tastes burnt, swap the coil—your throat will thank you.

Ops FAQs

Q: Why does my pod taste burnt after I refill it?

Most likely the wick didn't absorb the juice yet. After refilling, wait at least 5–10 minutes before vaping. If you're in a hurry, tilt the pod to help the liquid reach the wick, but patience is the real fix.

Q: Can I fix a burnt taste by turning up the wattage?

No—turning up the wattage usually makes it worse. The burnt taste means the coil is too hot for the liquid to wick properly. Lower the wattage if you can, and keep your draws shorter.

Q: How do I know when to replace the coil or pod?

If the burnt taste lingers after trying the steps, or if you notice less vapor and a darker liquid, the coil is spent. Most pods last 1–2 weeks with regular use. If you're commuting daily, you might need to swap it sooner.

Q: Is it safe to keep vaping a burnt pod?

It's not harmful in the short term, but it tastes bad and can be harsh. Prolonged use of a burnt coil isn't ideal—replace it. If you feel any irritation, stop and dispose of the pod properly.

Ops summary

• A burnt taste in a pod system usually means the coil is dry, the wattage is too high, or the coil has reached the end of its life. Simple fixes like letting the pod sit after filling, lowering wattage, and priming new coils can solve the issue for most commuters. If the burnt taste persists after troubleshooting, replace the coil or pod to avoid inhaling unpleasant byproducts.
• Burnt taste often comes from a dry coil—wait 5–10 minutes after filling before vaping.
• Lower your wattage if your device allows it; high power can scorch the wick.
• Prime new coils by letting them soak; avoid chain-vaping on your commute.
• If the burnt taste won't go away, replace the coil or pod—don't force it.
• Never try to open or modify your pod; it's not safe or necessary.
