We tested and compared the six POS systems vape shop owners actually consider — Lightspeed, KORONA, Cova, POS Nation, Clover, and Square — on vape compatibility, age verification, high-risk payment integration, inventory, and price.

Your POS is the spine of your vape shop: it rings sales, scans IDs, tracks age-restricted inventory, and — critically — it has to work with a high-risk payment processor, because the mainstream options your POS vendor recommends will get you terminated. After hands-on testing, merchant interviews, and compatibility checks with major vape payment processors, here are the best vape shop POS systems in 2026.

Quick verdict Best overall for growing shops: Lightspeed Retail — best-in-class inventory and multi-store, but you'll pair it with a third-party high-risk processor. Best value with built-in age verification: KORONA POS — built for age-restricted retail, offers its own high-risk processing. Best for compliance-heavy workflows: Cova POS — dispensary-grade rules, from inventory to reporting. Best budget pick for single stores: POS Nation — affordable, no long-term contract, vape-friendly. Avoid for vape: Square (explicitly prohibits vape sales) and Clover's native processing (no vape underwriting).

Quick Picks Table

Individual Reviews

1. Lightspeed Retail · Rating: 9.0/10 · Best overall Multi-location power · pairs with third-party high-risk processors Lightspeed is the strongest all-around retail POS for vape shops that have outgrown a single counter. Its inventory engine is genuinely excellent — you can track e-liquid by SKU and batch, set reorder points, and manage variants (nicotine strength, flavor) without gymnastics. Multi-location sync and consolidated reporting make it the natural choice for chains. It integrates with high-risk payment processors such as WAAVE, PayKings, and EMB, so vape merchants can keep Lightspeed and still get underwritten. The trade-offs: age verification is not built in the way age-restricted-focused competitors do it — you'll add an ID scanner at the register and an age-gate app if you sell online. Pricing is mid-to-premium, and the ecommerce add-on costs extra. For a single small shop, it's more system than you need. Pros Best-in-class inventory & multi-store reportingStrong third-party high-risk processor integrationExcellent analytics and API Cons Age verification is add-on, not nativeHigher cost; ecommerce billed separatelySteeper learning curve

2. KORONA POS · Rating: 8.8/10 · Best value Purpose-built for age-restricted retail · own high-risk processing KORONA markets itself to "age-restricted" retailers — convenience, smoke, and vape shops — and it shows. ID scanning is a first-class feature at the register, which is exactly what your compliance checklist demands. KORONA also offers its own integrated payment processing that underwrites vape merchants, removing the "will my processor accept me" problem entirely. Inventory, promotions, and customer profiles are solid, and per-location pricing stays friendly even for chains. The trade-offs: the interface feels more utilitarian than Lightspeed's polish, and reporting depth, while good, isn't in the same league for deep analytics. If your operation is a straightforward vape/smoke shop that wants compliance out of the box, KORONA delivers the best value on this list. Pros Built-in age verification / ID scanningOwn high-risk payment processingTransparent, competitive pricing Cons Less polished UX than competitorsAnalytics depth is middlingSome advanced features cost extra

3. Cova POS · Rating: 8.2/10 · Compliance-first Dispensary-grade rules engine · heavy compliance reporting Cova built its reputation in cannabis dispensaries, and that heritage shows in compliance features: chain-of-custody-style inventory, granular audit logs, and reporting designed for regulators. If your vape business involves wholesale distribution, multi-location oversight, or any operation where "show me your records" is a monthly occurrence, Cova is the safest pair of hands. It also handles age verification and integrates with payment partners that understand high-risk categories. The trade-offs are real: it's the priciest option here, and its feature set assumes you need dispensary-level control — which many single-store vape shops don't. Support and onboarding are built around larger operators. Pros Superior compliance & audit reportingExcellent inventory controlMulti-location strength Cons Most expensive on this listOverkill for small single storesOnboarding aimed at bigger operators

4. POS Nation · Rating: 7.9/10 · Best budget Month-to-month, no contract · friendly to smoke & vape shops POS Nation is the pragmatic choice for a single smoke or vape shop that doesn't want a multi-year commitment. Pricing is clear and month-to-month, hardware bundles are affordable, and the company openly works with age-restricted retailers. You can integrate an ID scanner, and it pairs with high-risk processors without fuss. For a shop running one register with a modest SKU count, it gets the job done at a fraction of Lightspeed's cost. The trade-offs: features are thinner — inventory is capable but not deep, ecommerce integration is basic, and reporting won't satisfy a chain operator. If you plan to scale to multiple locations, you'll likely outgrow it. Pros No long-term contractAffordable hardware bundlesVape/smoke-shop friendly Cons Limited advanced featuresBasic ecommerce integrationWeak for multi-store scale

5. Clover · Rating: 6.5/10 · Use with caution Great hardware · native processing won't underwrite vape Clover's hardware is excellent and widely available — but the catch is processing. Clover's native payment processing (powered by its acquiring partners) generally does not underwrite vape merchants, so the "just plug in a Clover" path closes for you. The workaround is a third-party high-risk processor that supports Clover terminals; some do, which makes Clover a viable hardware platform if you're willing to assemble the stack yourself. The trade-offs: monthly fees add up (plan + hardware lease + processor fees), and the app ecosystem is geared to restaurants and general retail rather than age-restricted compliance. It's a fine terminal, a poor out-of-the-box compliance solution. Pros Reliable, popular hardwareFlexible form factorsWidely available support Cons Native processing rejects vapeCompliance features are add-onsFees stack up quickly

6. Square for Retail · Rating: 2.0/10 · Do not use for vape Prohibited category — account termination risk Square is the system vape shop owners ask about most and should use least. Square's Acceptable Use Policy explicitly prohibits the sale of tobacco and vaping products. When Square detects vape transactions — often months in — it terminates the account and holds funds for a rolling period. That's not a risk; it's a certainty with enough volume. Even if you find the free tier attractive, the cost of a frozen payout is catastrophic for a small shop's cash flow. If you're currently on Square, migrate before the freeze, not after. Export your customer and inventory data, pick a vape-capable system from this list, and move to a high-risk processor that underwrites you properly. Pros Free entry tierPolished UXEasy setup Cons Prohibits vape sales outrightAccount termination + fund holdsNo compliance path for age-restricted retail

Head-to-Head Comparison

How We Evaluated

We score each system across five weighted criteria, with vape compatibility weighted most heavily — because a beautiful POS that gets your account terminated scores zero on everything else.

• Vape compatibility & high-risk payments — 30% (native vape underwriting, high-risk gateway integration)
• Compliance features — 25% (ID/age verification, audit logs, age-restricted reporting)
• Value & pricing — 20% (total cost over 24 months, contracts, hardware)
• Inventory & operations — 15% (SKU/batch tracking, multi-store, reporting)
• Ease of use & support — 10% (setup, training, support quality)

How we test: hands-on trials of each system's demo environment; merchant interviews across smoke and vape shop communities; compatibility checks with major high-risk processors (WAAVE, PayKings, EMB); review of each vendor's acceptable-use policies and age-restricted retail documentation; and cross-checking FDA/ATF guidance on age verification and record-keeping. Pricing reflects published US list prices as of August 2026 and varies by location and negotiation.

What we couldn't test: processing approval is case-by-case — your business history, volume, and processor choice determine final approval. Always confirm vape eligibility with the vendor in writing before you sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Square for my vape shop?

No. Square's Acceptable Use Policy explicitly prohibits the sale of tobacco and vaping products. When Square detects vape transactions, it terminates the account and can hold funds. If you're on Square, migrate to a vape-capable POS with a high-risk processor before the freeze — not after.

What is the best POS system for a vape shop?

For most shops, KORONA POS is the best value: built for age-restricted retail, with ID scanning and its own high-risk processing. Lightspeed Retail is the best overall for growing multi-location operations with deep inventory needs. Cova wins when compliance reporting is your top priority.

Do I need a special POS for high-risk payment processing?

The POS doesn't process payments itself, but it must integrate with a gateway that underwrites vape merchants. KORONA and Cova offer vape-capable processing directly; Lightspeed, POS Nation, and Clover pair with third-party high-risk processors like WAAVE, PayKings, or EMB.

Which POS has built-in age verification for vape shops?

KORONA POS includes ID scanning built in, and Cova supports age-verification workflows for age-restricted products. For Lightspeed, POS Nation, and Clover, you add an ID scanner that integrates at the register — budget roughly $30–60/month or a one-time hardware cost.

How much does a vape shop POS cost?

Software runs $69–300+/month depending on system and features, plus hardware ($0–1,000 one-time or ~$20–80/month financed) and payment processing fees (typically 1.0–1.8% total for high-risk vape merchants). POS Nation and KORONA are the budget-friendly options; Cova is the premium end.

Is Lightspeed good for vape shops?

Yes — with one caveat. Lightspeed's inventory and multi-store features are excellent for vape, but it doesn't underwrite payments itself, so you must pair it with a third-party high-risk processor. With that in place, it's our pick for growing chains.

What POS do smoke shops use?

Common setups among smoke and vape shops: KORONA (age-restricted focus), Lightspeed (growing operations), and POS Nation (budget single stores). Cannabis-adjacent operators often use Cova. Whatever the system, the constant is a high-risk processor and ID scanning at the register.

The Verdict

Final call For a single vape shop that wants compliance out of the box, choose KORONA POS — built-in ID scanning and vape-capable processing remove the two biggest failure points in one purchase. For a growing chain with serious inventory needs, Lightspeed Retail is worth the extra assembly (pair it with a high-risk processor from our payment guide). For compliance-heavy operations, Cova is the premium safety net. And whatever you do — do not run vape on Square.
