Here is a statistic that should make you uncomfortable: 62% of vape product returns are caused by user error, not product failure.

That number comes from retail warranty data across three major UK distributors. And it means one thing: most brands are including the wrong information in the box, in the wrong format, in the wrong place. Then they pay for it with returns, chargebacks, and retailer frustration.

The insert card is not an afterthought. It is the cheapest insurance policy you will ever buy.

Let me tell you what actually belongs in the box.

First: the quick-start card. Not a manual. A card. Five inches by three inches. Three steps. That is it. "Step 1: Remove seal. Step 2: Charge fully (light turns green). Step 3: Draw gently." If your product needs more than three steps to start, the product is the problem, not the card.

The quick-start card should use icons, not paragraphs. A pictogram of removing a seal. A pictogram of plugging in a USB-C cable. A pictogram of drawing on the device. Icons cross language barriers. They work for every customer in every market. They also prevent the number one return reason: "I could not figure out how to turn it on."

Second: the safety card. This is the regulatory requirement. Overheating warnings. Storage temperature range. Disposal instructions. Contact information for adverse events. Put it on a separate card. Do not merge it with the quick-start guide. The safety card is a compliance document. The quick-start card is a user experience document. They serve different purposes. Treat them differently.

Third: the warranty card. Most brands skip this. That is a mistake. A warranty card with a visible serial number and a clear claim process does two things: it signals confidence in the product, and it routes warranty claims to you instead of the retailer. Retailers notice. When a customer walks in with a dead device and no warranty path, the retailer absorbs the cost. When that same customer has a warranty card, the retailer sends them to you. Guess which retailer reorders your product.

Fourth: the QR code. But not for a website. For a video. A 30-second video showing the customer how to use the device. Link it to an unlisted YouTube video or a hosted page. Update it when you need to. The QR code is a living document. Use it that way.

Here is what does NOT belong in the box: a 20-page booklet in 6pt font that nobody reads. A folded poster with your brand story. A sticker sheet. A loyalty card for a program that does not exist yet. Every extra piece of paper is landfill. Every extra piece of paper is a cost you did not need to absorb.

One more thing: the material matters. Glossy paper looks premium but is unreadable under shop lighting. Matte card stock is boring but legible. Legible wins. Always.

The brands that get this right treat the insert card as a UX asset, not a regulatory checkbox. They spend real time on it. They test it. They iterate. And they see returns drop by 30 to 40 percent within the first quarter.
