The nicotine salt vs. freebase debate has been going on since 2015. At this point, the data is clear. The decision tree is not complicated. If you are still agonizing, here is the answer.

Nicotine salts are absorbed faster. Period. A 20mg nic salt delivers nicotine to your bloodstream in roughly 6-8 seconds. Freebase at the same strength takes 15-20 seconds. The difference is the benzoic acid added to salt formulations, which lowers the pH and allows the nicotine to cross cell membranes more efficiently. Faster absorption means faster satisfaction. If you come from a cigarette background, this is the one that feels familiar.

But here is the trade-off: nic salts are smooth. Almost too smooth. You can comfortably vape 20mg salt without coughing. Try that with 18mg freebase and your throat will feel like sandpaper. That smoothness is why salt users often consume more nicotine than they realize. The throat hit is a natural limiter, and salts remove it.

Freebase nicotine delivers the throat hit. It is the traditional format. At 3mg and 6mg, it is the standard for sub-ohm vaping. The absorption is slower but the experience is more textured. You feel each puff. For vapers who enjoy the ritual as much as the nicotine, freebase is the choice.

Device compatibility is the real decision-maker. Nic salts are designed for low-wattage, mouth-to-lung devices — pod systems, starter kits, anything under 20W. Put 20mg salt in a sub-ohm tank at 60W and you will get sick. Freebase 3mg is made for sub-ohm, direct-lung setups. Put 3mg in a pod system and you will chain vape all day without satisfaction.

Here is the rule most shops will not give you straight: if you vape under 20W, use nic salts at 10-20mg. If you vape over 30W, use freebase at 3-6mg. That is the framework. Everything else is noise.
