Nic salts and freebase nicotine are chemically different, and that difference changes everything about how you vape — the throat hit, the absorption speed, the device you need, and how much nicotine you actually consume.

Freebase nicotine is pure nicotine extracted from tobacco. It's harsh at high concentrations. That's why freebase juices top out at 18mg/ml, and even that feels like sandpaper. The throat hit is aggressive. Absorption is slow — it takes 5-10 minutes to feel the full effect. This is what sub-ohm vapers use, typically at 3mg or 6mg.

Nicotine salts are nicotine molecules bonded with benzoic acid. This chemical change makes the nicotine smoother at high concentrations and faster-absorbing. A 20mg nic salt hits your bloodstream in about 30 seconds, comparable to a cigarette. The throat hit is mild. This is what pod system users vape, typically at 10-20mg in a 50/50 PG/VG blend.

The rule that matters: nic salts in low-wattage pod systems (8-18W), freebase in sub-ohm tanks (40W+). Put 20mg nic salts in a 60W sub-ohm tank and you'll get sick. Put 3mg freebase in a 10W pod and you'll chain-vape all day and still crave a cigarette.

If you're quitting smoking, start with nic salts. The fast absorption curve mimics a cigarette. If you're a hobbyist chasing clouds and flavor, freebase at 3mg is the standard for a reason.
