The label says 20mg. You take a puff. It hits hard. Too hard. You check the label again. Still 20mg. You wonder if the manufacturer printed the wrong number. They did not. You just do not know what 20mg actually means.

Here is the thing about nicotine strength labels: the number on the bottle is not the amount of nicotine you absorb. It is the concentration in the liquid. And the gap between those two things is where most people get confused.

20mg/ml means there are 20 milligrams of nicotine dissolved in every milliliter of liquid. A standard 2ml pod contains 40mg of nicotine total. A 10ml bottle contains 200mg of nicotine total. But you do not absorb anywhere near that amount. Depending on the device, the coil, the wattage, and your draw style, you absorb somewhere between 20 and 50 percent of the nicotine in the vapor. The rest is exhaled. So that 20mg/ml label? Your body might only be getting 4 to 10mg per milliliter of liquid consumed.

This is why the device matters more than the label. A 20mg liquid in a low-power pod system at 8 watts delivers a completely different nicotine experience than the same liquid in a sub-ohm tank at 50 watts. The sub-ohm tank produces roughly four to five times more vapor per puff. That means four to five times more nicotine delivered per puff. Same liquid. Same label. Totally different experience.

The percentage system adds more confusion. 20mg/ml is equivalent to 2.0 percent nicotine by volume. 10mg/ml is 1.0 percent. 5mg/ml is 0.5 percent. Some brands label in milligrams, some in percentages. Both are correct. Neither is intuitive. Just remember: move the decimal. 20mg/ml equals 2.0 percent. That is the only conversion you need.

Here is the practical advice: if you are using a low-power pod system, start at 10mg or 20mg. If you are using a sub-ohm tank or a high-wattage mod, start at 3mg or 6mg. If you come from a cigarette background, a pack-a-day habit corresponds roughly to 20mg liquid in a pod system. A half-pack habit corresponds to 10mg. These are starting points, not rules. Your tolerance and preference will vary.

The number on the bottle is not the experience. It is the input. The output depends on everything else. Choose accordingly. This content is intended for adults 21 years of age or older.
