Here is the question every vape buyer should ask and almost nobody does: "What does the screen actually do for me?"

The answer, for about 80% of users, is "nothing useful." But the industry has spent a decade convincing people that a screen is a premium feature. So screens keep getting bigger, brighter, and more expensive. Meanwhile, the devices without screens keep outselling them. There is a lesson in that.

Let me do the comparison that nobody in the industry wants to make.

A screen shows you information. Battery percentage. Wattage. Puff count. Coil resistance. Sometimes a puff timer. Sometimes a clock. Sometimes a wallpaper. The question is not whether this information exists. The question is whether it changes your behavior.

Battery percentage. A screen says "67%." A single LED indicator says "green." The LED tells you the device is charged enough to use. The percentage tells you the exact number. Does the exact number change anything? If the device is at 67%, you are not charging it. If it is at 23%, you are probably not charging it either. You charge it when it is dead or when it is convenient. The percentage is data. The LED is information. Data without action is noise.

Wattage. A screen lets you adjust wattage in 0.5W increments. For a pod system with a fixed coil, adjustable wattage is pointless. The coil is designed to operate in a specific range. The device should be set to that range. The only reason to adjust wattage is if you are using a rebuildable atomizer or a tank with multiple coil options. If you are using a pod system with pre-built pods, adjustable wattage is a feature you will use once and never touch again. That is not a feature. That is a setting.

Puff count. A screen tracks how many puffs you have taken. Why? What decision does the puff count inform? The only potential use case is to track coil life. But coil life is measured in milliliters of e-liquid, not puffs. A puff can be 0.5 seconds or 5 seconds. The puff count treats them the same. It is meaningless data. It is on the screen because it is cheap to add, not because it is useful.

Here is what a screen costs you. Battery life. A color screen draws 10 to 20% of the total battery budget on a pod system. A device without a screen lasts 20% longer on the same battery capacity. That is a real trade-off. You are trading runtime for a number that does not change your behavior. That is a bad trade.

Cost. A device with a screen costs $5 to $10 more than the same device without one. Over the life of a product line, that is hundreds of thousands of dollars in BOM cost. For a screen that most users do not need. That cost gets passed to the consumer. The consumer pays for a feature they do not use.

Durability. A screen is a point of failure. It cracks. It scratches. It fails in extreme temperatures. An LED is a single diode. It costs 3 cents. It lasts 50,000 hours. It cannot crack because there is nothing to crack. The screenless device is more durable by design. That is not an opinion. That is a material property.

The case for a screen: if you use a rebuildable atomizer, if you switch between multiple coil types, if you use temperature control, if you are a hobbyist who wants precise control over every variable. That is a real use case. It is also about 5% of the market. For the other 95%, a screen is a rectangle that drains battery and displays numbers that do not matter.

The honest comparison is this: screenless devices are cheaper, more durable, and last longer on a charge. Screened devices offer customization that most users do not need. Buy the screen if you know why you need it. If you do not know, you do not need it. The LED is enough. It has been enough for years. It will continue to be enough.
