Here is the fastest way to make vaping look bad: do it in a place where nobody wants to see it.

This is not a legal article. This is a social contract article. The law tells you where you can vape. Common sense tells you where you should. And the gap between those two things is where public perception of vaping is won or lost, one interaction at a time.

Let me be direct. Vaping indoors in a restaurant, a bar, a shop, or any enclosed public space is not just against the rules in most places. It is against the unwritten rule that adults do not impose their habits on strangers. The fact that vapor dissipates faster than smoke does not matter. The fact that it smells like fruit does not matter. The fact that you are technically allowed to do it in some jurisdictions does not matter. What matters is that the person at the next table did not consent to sit in your cloud. Respect that.

Public transport. Do not. It does not matter if the platform is outdoors. It does not matter if the train is delayed. It does not matter if you are the only person in the carriage. Public transport is a shared space where people cannot leave. Vaping in a shared space where people cannot leave is a violation of the most basic social contract. Do not do it.

Workplaces. Your employer's policy is the rule. Even if the policy is unwritten. Even if other people do it. Even if you are outside. The office car park is still the workplace. The smoking shelter is still the workplace. If you are unsure, ask. If you are still unsure, do not vape there. Your job is worth more than a nicotine hit.

Social gatherings. This is the nuanced one. At a barbecue in someone's back garden, vaping is probably fine. At a formal dinner party, it is probably not. At a pub beer garden, it depends on the pub and the company. The rule: if you are the only person vaping, you are doing it wrong. Read the room. If nobody else is using a nicotine product, you are the outlier. The outlier is always the one who needs to adjust.

Cloud control. This is a specific skill. A pod system produces a small, dissipating vapor. A sub-ohm tank at 80 watts produces a visible fog bank. If you are in a public outdoor space, keep the cloud small. A discreet exhale. A downward angle. The goal is to consume nicotine, not to announce that you are consuming nicotine. Nobody needs to know what flavor you are vaping from 20 feet away.

The car. If you are driving, do not vape. A cloud that obscures your vision for half a second is a half-second too long. If you are a passenger, ask the driver. If the driver says no, it is no. If the driver says yes, crack a window. Vapor residue builds up on car windows faster than you think. The driver will notice. You will not be invited back.

Here is the principle that underpins all of this: your right to vape ends where someone else's right to not be affected by it begins. That is not a legal principle. It is a social one. And it is the one that determines whether the person next to you thinks "vaping is fine" or "vapers are obnoxious." Be the reason they think the first one. Not the second one.

The public perception of vaping is shaped by the worst behavior of the most visible vapers. Do not be the worst behavior. Do not be the most visible. Vape like an adult who understands that other adults exist. It is not complicated. It is just rare. This content is intended for adults 21 years of age or older. Nicotine is an addictive chemical.
