Not all mods are the same. Here are the main categories to know:
Regulated vs Mechanical
Regulated mods have electronic circuitry that controls the power output. They include safety features like short-circuit protection, low-voltage protection, over-current protection, and reverse polarity protection. You can set the exact wattage or temperature you want. This is what 99% of vapers should use.
Mechanical mods (mech mods) have no electronics at all — they're just a metal tube or box that connects the battery directly to the atomizer when you press the fire button. No safety features, no power control, just raw battery power. They're for advanced users only who have a deep understanding of battery safety, Ohm's Law, and coil building. Most people should avoid mech mods.
Box Mods vs Tube Mods
Box mods are rectangular (box-shaped) and typically use 1-2 batteries. They have screens, menus, and more features. Most mods on the market are box mods.
Tube mods are cylindrical, like a thicker e-cigarette. They're usually single-battery and have a more minimalist design. They're less common these days but still popular with MTL vapers and people who prefer a pen-style shape.
Pods vs Mods
For a detailed comparison, see our best pod vapes guide. The short version: pods are simpler, smaller, and easier to use. Mods offer better flavor, more vapor, longer battery life, and more customization — but they're bigger and more complex.
