Here is something most shops will not tell a first-time buyer: about 40% of new vapers make the same five mistakes in their first month. And those mistakes are the reason 40% of new vapers go back to cigarettes within 90 days.

That is not a product problem. That is an information problem. The industry spends billions on devices and almost nothing on telling people how to use them properly. This article fixes that.

Mistake one: buying the wrong nicotine strength. This is the single worst mistake and the most common one. A pack-a-day smoker needs 20mg nicotine salt. Not 6mg. Not 3mg. Not whatever the person at the counter happens to be vaping. The wrong strength means the device does not satisfy the craving. The craving wins. The device goes in a drawer. Match the nicotine strength to the previous cigarette consumption. It is not complicated. But nobody explains it, so people guess. And they guess wrong.

Mistake two: the death-grip draw. New vapers pull on a device like they are trying to drink a milkshake through a coffee stirrer. That does not work. Vape devices use a gentle, steady draw. Mouth-to-lung, not direct-to-lung. Think of sipping hot coffee. You do not chug it. You sip. Same principle. A hard draw on a pod system pulls excess liquid into the coil, floods it, and creates a gurgling, spitting mess. Light draw. Steady pull. Let the device do the work.

Mistake three: letting the device run dry. Most pod systems have a minimum fill line. It is there for a reason. When the e-liquid drops below the cotton wicking ports, the coil burns dry. That is a dry hit. A dry hit is not recoverable. The coil is ruined. The pod is ruined. Keep the liquid above the minimum line. Check it every time you charge. It takes two seconds. It saves a pod.

Mistake four: charging with the wrong cable. Fast-charging bricks deliver more power than most vape batteries are designed to handle. A 65W laptop charger plugged into a pod system rated for 1A charging is a recipe for a dead battery. Use the cable that came in the box. Use a standard USB-A port on a computer or a basic 1A wall adapter. If the device gets warm during charging, unplug it. Battery degradation from improper charging is cumulative and invisible until it is not.

Mistake five: buying the wrong device for the use case. Someone who wants a cigarette-like experience and buys a sub-ohm tank with a 0.15 ohm coil is going to have a bad time. Someone who wants huge clouds and buys a 10W pod system is going to be disappointed. Match the device to the experience. Mouth-to-lung devices for cigarette-like draws. Direct-lung devices for cloud production. Pod systems for simplicity. Mods for customization. The device is not good or bad. It is appropriate or inappropriate. Know the difference.

Here is the takeaway: every one of these mistakes is avoidable. Every one of them is caused by a lack of clear information, not a lack of good products. The industry needs to do better at onboarding. Until it does, you now know what to avoid. The first month is the hardest. Get through it clean, and the rest is easy. This content is intended for adults 21 years of age or older.
