A 5,000-unit MOQ is not a purchase order. It is a cash flow decision disguised as a procurement term.

Here is the math most first-time buyers do not do. 5,000 units at $3.50 landed cost per unit is $17,500. Add shipping at $1,200. Add customs duties and clearance at roughly $900. Your total landed cost is about $19,600. If your wholesale sell price is $6.50 and your sell-through is 1,000 units per month, you recover your investment in five months. But that is not the full picture. You also need to carry inventory, handle returns, and fund your next order before the first one sells out. Your actual working capital requirement is closer to $30,000.

MOQ negotiation is not about asking for a lower number. It is about understanding the supplier's economics. A supplier running a production line that produces 10,000 units per shift is not going to stop the line for 500 units. But they might run a shared mold with a different color for your 2,000-unit order if you pay the color-change fee. The fee is typically $300-500. On 2,000 units, that adds $0.15-0.25 per unit. Compare that to the cost of carrying 3,000 units of excess inventory, and the math usually favors the fee.

Production economics at the supplier level are driven by setup time. The mold change, material loading, and line calibration take roughly the same time whether you order 1,000 units or 10,000. The supplier's MOQ is not arbitrary. It is the point at which the setup cost per unit drops below their target margin threshold. Understanding that threshold lets you negotiate from a position of knowledge, not hope.

The most dangerous MOQ mistake is ordering more than you can sell in six months. Vape hardware does not improve with age. Batteries degrade. Seals dry out. Packaging gets dated. The shelf life of a filled disposable is typically 12-18 months. Ordering 18 months of inventory means your last units ship with 6 months of shelf life remaining. Your wholesale customers will notice. And they will negotiate accordingly. This content is intended for adults 21 years of age or older. Nicotine is an addictive chemical.
