Not sure whether your current device is MTL, RDL, or DTL? You can figure it out in under 30 seconds by checking three things:
1 Check the Coil Resistance
The easiest way is to look at your coil's ohm rating. It's usually printed on the coil itself or listed on the packaging.
- 1.0Ω or higher → almost certainly MTL
- 0.4–0.8Ω → likely RDL (or sometimes called "loose MTL")
- Below 0.3Ω → definitely DTL / sub-ohm
If you're using a regulated device, it should display the coil resistance on the screen when you fire it. You can learn more about how resistance affects your vape in our complete coil guide.
2 Look at the Airflow Slots
Take a close look at the airflow holes on your tank or pod:
- Small, narrow slots → MTL (tight draw)
- Medium slots → RDL (moderate draw)
- Wide, large openings → DTL (airy draw)
Many pod systems have adjustable airflow — a small dial or switch that lets you change the size of the airflow opening. If your device has this, you can actually switch between MTL and RDL (or even a loose RDL) on the same device. Some even have dual-coil options so you can swap coils and airflow together.
3 Feel the Draw
The ultimate test is simply to take a puff and notice how it feels:
- Feels like sucking through a narrow straw → MTL
- Feels like breathing through a slightly pinched straw → RDL
- Feels like taking a normal deep breath → DTL
If you have to work hard to pull vapor into your mouth, it's probably MTL. If vapor flows easily and fills your lungs in one breath, it's DTL. Anything in between is likely RDL.
