First glance (10 seconds)

Walk into any vape shop and the shelves are a wall of colorful bottles. Your first instinct might be to grab the one with the coolest name. Stop. Spend ten seconds looking at the label. That's where the real information lives.

Flip the bottle over. You're looking for two numbers: the VG/PG ratio. It's often printed right there, something like "70/30" or "50/50." If you can't find it, put the bottle down. A liquid that hides its ratio is either careless or trying to trick you, and neither is a good sign.

You're also looking for the nicotine strength in milligrams per milliliter. That's your mg/mL. If the label doesn't state both the ratio and the nic level clearly, it's not worth your time.

Specs worth reading

Once you've found the ratio, think about what it means for you.

Higher VG, like 70/30 or 80/20, means thicker liquid. That translates to bigger clouds and a smoother inhale. If you're using a sub-ohm tank or a rebuildable atomizer, this is your sweet spot. The coils can handle the thickness, and you get the dense vapor you're after.

Higher PG, like 50/50 or 60/40, is thinner and carries flavor more efficiently. It also gives a stronger throat hit, which many ex-smokers prefer because it mimics the sensation of a cigarette. Pod systems and smaller devices work best here because the thinner liquid wicks easily and doesn't gunk up the coil as fast.

There's also the question of nicotine salts. If you're using salts, you're almost certainly in a pod or a low-wattage device, and you'll want a higher PG ratio. Salts are designed for that setup, and high VG can cause dry hits.

Specs to ignore

Don't get distracted by the marketing noise. The brand name, the flashy graphics, the "premium" label—none of that tells you how the liquid will perform.

Ignore the vague descriptors like "smooth" or "intense." They're subjective at best and meaningless at worst. What matters is the actual VG/PG ratio and the nicotine strength.

Also, be wary of liquids that don't list a production date or a batch code. A reputable manufacturer will always include those. If the bottle has no batch code, you have no way to know how long it sat in a warehouse before hitting the shelf. That's a red flag.

Questions for staff

If you're still unsure, ask the person behind the counter. A good staffer won't just point to the newest product—they'll ask you about your device and your preferences.

Start with these questions:

• "What's the VG/PG ratio, and is it listed on the bottle?"
• "Does this liquid work well in my device?" (Bring your device or know its model and coil resistance.)
• "Is this a freebase or nicotine salt?"
• "How thick is this liquid compared to others?"

If they can't answer these without checking the label, you're not getting advice, you're getting a sales pitch. Trust your gut and go somewhere else if needed.

Checkout decision

Take a final look at the bottle before you pay. Check the tamper-evident seal, the batch code, and the expiration date if there is one. If any of that is missing, choose another.

Think about your habit. If you're a cloud chaser, you already know you want high VG. If you're using a pod, you want higher PG. If you're new, stick with a balanced 50/50 to start—it's the most versatile.

One more thing: keep your liquid in a cool, dark place once you get home. Heat and sunlight degrade nicotine and affect flavor. If you're traveling, that's a whole other conversation—check out our guide on flying with a vape for the TSA rules.

Why this matters

Getting the VG/PG ratio right is the difference between a satisfying vape and a leaky mess. Too thick for your coil and you'll get burnt hits. Too thin for your tank and it'll flood. It's not about one being superior—it's about the match.

If you're mixing your own liquids, the same logic applies, but you have more control. Our e-liquid calculator can help you nail the split, the nicotine base, and the bottle size before you even start.

Final thoughts

Buying vape liquid doesn't have to be a gamble. The label tells you almost everything you need to know. The ratio, the nicotine strength, the batch code. If those are clear, you're on solid ground.

And if you're still on the fence, ask a human. The right shop and the right staff can make all the difference. Then, when you get home, store it properly and enjoy a consistent vape every time.
