Most vape brands run a sample order and learn nothing. Here is why.
They order 20 units. They vape 5 of them. They put 10 on a shelf. They give 5 to friends. Then they place a 10,000-unit production order based on the experience of 5 units vaped by people who already like them. That is not sampling. That is confirmation bias with a purchase order attached.
A test order that actually tells you something needs three things: a sample size that matters, a test protocol that simulates real use, and a feedback loop that captures data from people who are not you.
Sample size: for a new device, you need at least 50 units. 10 for your internal team to vape start to finish. 20 for structured testing across multiple variables — draw consistency, flavor degradation, leak behavior, battery endurance. 20 for external testers who are not emotionally invested in the product succeeding. The external testers are the most important group. They are the ones who will tell you the mouthpiece is uncomfortable when you have convinced yourself it is fine.
What to test: vape all 50 units to completion. Do not stop at 50% and declare victory. The second half of a device's life is where the problems surface. Coil degradation. Flavor fading. Leak emergence. Battery performance drop-off. If you only test the first 300 puffs, you are testing the honeymoon period. The divorce happens later.
Evaluation criteria should be quantitative wherever possible. "Flavor was good" is not data. "Flavor intensity rated 4/5 through puff 200, 3/5 through puff 400, 2/5 through puff 500" is data. Create a simple scoring sheet. Make your testers fill it out. The act of scoring forces them to pay attention in a way that casual feedback does not.
The feedback loop is the most skipped step. After your testers complete their units, sit down with them for 15 minutes each. Ask what they liked. Ask what they would change. Ask if they would buy it at retail. The answer to that last question is the only metric that matters. This content is intended for adults 21 years of age or older. Nicotine is an addictive chemical.
