Mistake: You Over-Prime the Coil

The most common mistake we see is treating a new device like a fountain pen. You fill it, then squeeze extra drops straight into the coil or mouthpiece to 'help it along.' That just floods the coil with more juice than it can vaporize. The result: gurgling on the first puff and sometimes a mouthful of warm liquid.

Let the wick do its job. After filling, wait two to three minutes for the cotton to soak up juice naturally. If you’re using a refillable device, a full tank is fine, but don’t force extra drops into the center airway. For disposables, they come pre-primed, so no extra action is needed. If you’ve already over-primed, take a few dry puffs without pressing the fire button to pull excess juice through, then wipe the mouthpiece.

Mistake: You Draw Too Hard or Too Fast

A hard, fast draw is natural if you’re used to cigarettes, but it pulls extra e-liquid into the coil faster than it can vaporize. That extra juice collects, gets hot, and spits back at you. It also increases the chance of condensation building up in the mouthpiece, which you’ll taste as weak, watery vapor.

Slow down. Take a steady, gentle draw for two to three seconds, then stop. If your device has adjustable airflow, open it a bit more—restricted airflow increases suction, which pulls more juice. After each use, give the mouthpiece a quick wipe to clear condensation. This habit alone fixes most spitting issues.

Mistake: You Store or Hold the Device Upside Down

Most devices are designed to be held with the mouthpiece up. When you lay one on its side in a pocket or bag, gravity pulls e-liquid toward the airflow holes and the battery connection. That’s how you end up with a sticky mess in your pocket or, worse, liquid seeping into the charging port.

Keep your vape upright whenever you’re not using it. If you carry it in a pocket, make sure it’s vertical. When setting it down on a desk, place it on its base, not on its side. If you notice a small amount of liquid in the mouthpiece, wipe it clean before your next puff. If liquid reaches the battery or charging port, stop using the device immediately—it could short-circuit.

Mistake: You Ignore Airflow Blockages

Sometimes the problem isn’t your technique—it’s a clogged airflow path. Dust, pocket lint, or dried e-liquid can build up in the mouthpiece or airflow slots, creating a partial vacuum that pulls extra juice into the coil. The device starts to gurgle or taste burnt, and you may blame the coil when it’s just a blocked path.

Check the mouthpiece and air slots regularly. Use a dry cotton swab to clear any debris. If you’re using a refillable device, make sure the tank is seated properly and the O-rings are in place—a cracked or missing O-ring can break the seal and cause leaks. For disposables, if the airflow feels tight and cleaning doesn’t help, it’s likely time to replace the device.

Mistake: You Keep Puffing When It’s Already Flooded

Once the coil is flooded, every puff makes it worse. The excess liquid heats up, spits, and sometimes leaks out of the mouthpiece. Continuing to use it doesn’t burn off the excess—it just adds more heat and more mess.

Stop and troubleshoot. Set the device upright for a few minutes to let excess juice drain back into the tank. If that doesn’t help, take the pod or tank off (if possible) and blow gently through the mouthpiece into a tissue to push out excess liquid. If the device is disposable and shows no sign of improvement, replace it. A flooded disposable can’t be fixed by shaking it—that only spreads the problem.

The fix pattern that works

Almost every gurgle or leak traces back to one of these habits. Here’s the pattern we recommend:

• Prime less. Trust the wick to absorb.
• Draw slower. Gentle, steady pulls beat hard yanks.
• Keep it upright. Gravity is your friend when it works with you.
• Clean regularly. A quick wipe prevents clogs and condensation.
• Stop when it’s flooded. Give it time to settle before you puff again.

If you do all this and still get gurgling after a day, the device may have a manufacturing defect. Don’t try to disassemble it or bypass safety features. Contact the retailer or brand and replace it.

Prevention checklist

Before you reach for a device, run through this quick mental checklist:

• [ ] Is the mouthpiece clean and clear?
• [ ] Is the device upright?
• [ ] Are you taking slow, steady draws?
• [ ] Did you wait after filling before your first puff?
• [ ] Is there any liquid near the battery or charging port?

Answering 'no' to any of those? Fix it before you vape. If liquid has reached the battery, don’t try to dry it out with a charger—stop using the device and dispose of it properly.
