External 18650 cells require additional safety knowledge that internal-battery users never encounter. If you've moved to a regulated box mod, pay attention.
Understanding CDR (Continuous Discharge Rating)
Every 18650 has a CDR — the maximum current it can deliver continuously without overheating. Common ratings:
| Battery Model | Capacity | CDR | Best For | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung 25R | 2500mAh | 20A | Most regulated mods, 0.3 ohm+ | $8-10 |
| Sony/Murata VTC5A | 2500mAh | 25A | High-wattage mods, 0.15-0.3 ohm | $10-12 |
| Sony/Murata VTC6 | 3000mAh | 15-18A | Long battery life, moderate-wattage builds | $10-13 |
| Molicel P26A | 2600mAh | 25A | High-drain, high-wattage, sub-ohm | $9-11 |
| Molicel P28A | 2800mAh | 25A | Latest gen, balanced capacity and drain | $11-14 |
Counterfeit warning: Counterfeit 18650 batteries are a serious problem. Only buy from authorized retailers: Illumn, 18650BatteryStore, Battery Junction, or RTD Vapor. A fake "Sony VTC5A" on Amazon or eBay may contain a recycled laptop cell with a 6A CDR — if you draw 20A from it, thermal runaway is likely.
Battery Wraps and Insulator Rings
The plastic wrap on an 18650 is a safety component, not decoration. It prevents the metal casing (negative terminal) from contacting conductive surfaces. Here's what to inspect:
- Torn or peeling wrap: Exposes bare metal. If a conductive object bridges the exposed casing to the positive terminal, you get a dead short. Re-wrap immediately using a 18650 wrap kit ($3-5 on Amazon) — it takes 30 seconds with a hair dryer.
- Missing or damaged top insulator: The white or black ring under the positive terminal prevents the positive contact from touching the negative casing. If it's missing or deformed, the battery is unsafe — recycle it.
- Dents or damage to the casing: A dented 18650 has compromised internal structure. The internal separator may be pinched, creating a short-circuit path. Recycle immediately.
Monthly inspection: Set a calendar reminder to inspect your battery wraps once a month. It takes 30 seconds per cell and catches problems before they become incidents.
