Not all coils are created equal. Here's how the three main types compare:
| Coil Type | Material | Best For | Lifespan | Flavor Quality |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh | Kanthal/stainless steel mesh strip | Flavor chasing, DL & restricted DL | 10-14 days | Excellent BEST FLAVOR |
| Wire (Clapton/Twisted) | Kanthal, Ni80, SS316L, titanium | Cloud chasing, RBAs, advanced users | 7-10 days | Very Good |
| Ceramic | Ceramic plate with embedded wire | MTL, flavor purity, thin e-liquids | 14-21 days LONGEST | Excellent |
| Standard Wire | Single-strand Kanthal/SS | MTL, pod systems, beginners | 7-10 days | Good |
Mesh Coils: The Modern Standard
Mesh coils have become the default in most pod systems and sub-ohm tanks since 2020 — and for good reason. Instead of a single wire, mesh coils use a perforated metal strip that provides a much larger heating surface area. This means more even heat distribution, fewer hot spots, and better flavor extraction from your e-liquid.
Mesh coils also tend to last longer than traditional wire coils because the even heating reduces localized cotton burning. If your device supports mesh coils, they're almost always the better choice for flavor and longevity.
Wire Coils: For the Enthusiasts
Traditional wire coils — including Clapton, twisted, and parallel builds — are favored by cloud chasers and rebuildable atomizer (RBA) users. They offer more customization options for resistance and wicking, but require more skill to install and maintain. For most users, especially beginners, we recommend mesh coils over wire coils.
Ceramic Coils: The Long-Lasting Option
Ceramic coils use a porous ceramic plate with an embedded heating wire. The ceramic absorbs e-liquid evenly and resists burning, giving them the longest lifespan of any coil type. They're particularly good for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping and thinner e-liquids (50/50 VG/PG). However, they're less widely available and typically only work with specific devices.
