Choosing the right coil depends on three factors: your device, your e-liquid, and your vaping style. Here's a decision framework:
Step 1: Check Device Compatibility
Not all coils fit all devices. Each manufacturer uses proprietary coil heads — a Vaporesso coil won't work in an SMOK tank. Always check which coils your device supports before buying. Most devices list compatible coils in the user manual or on the manufacturer's website.
Step 2: Match Coil to E-Liquid Type
Your e-liquid's VG/PG ratio dictates which coils work best:
- High VG (70/30 or 80/20): Use sub-ohm mesh coils (0.1-0.5 ohm). Thicker e-liquid needs larger juice ports and more heat.
- 50/50 VG/PG: Works with almost any coil. The sweet spot for versatility.
- High PG or nicotine salts: Use MTL coils (1.0-1.8 ohm). Thinner e-liquid needs tighter wicking to prevent flooding. For more on nicotine types, see our salt nic vs freebase guide.
Step 3: Match Coil to Vaping Style
- Cigarette-like draw: 1.0-1.8 ohm coils, low wattage
- Balanced vapor and flavor: 0.6-1.0 ohm coils, medium wattage
- Big clouds, direct lung: 0.1-0.5 ohm mesh coils, high wattage
