Replacing a coil takes less than 5 minutes once you know the process. Follow these steps to avoid the most common mistake — not priming the new coil.
Step 1: Empty the Tank
Empty your tank or pod of any remaining e-liquid. Pour it out or vape it down to avoid waste. Don't skip this — you'll spill e-liquid everywhere if you remove a coil from a full tank.
Step 2: Remove the Old Coil
For sub-ohm tanks: unscrew the tank from the mod, unscrew the base, and unscrew the old coil from the base. For pod systems: remove the pod from the battery, then push the coil out from the bottom (some pods have a push-out design). Dispose of the old coil — it cannot be recycled in standard bins.
Step 3: Prime the New Coil
This is the most critical step. Apply 3-5 drops of e-liquid directly onto the cotton wicking material through the juice ports on the side of the coil. Wait 5-10 minutes for the cotton to fully saturate. Skipping this step causes immediate cotton burning and ruins the coil before you even start.
Why priming matters: Dry cotton hits 300°C+ instantly when voltage is applied. Saturated cotton distributes heat evenly and vaporizes e-liquid instead of burning. A coil vaped dry on its first fire can lose 50% of its lifespan before you even take a proper puff.
Step 4: Install the New Coil
Screw the new coil into the tank base firmly but do not overtighten — overtightening can damage the O-ring seals and cause leaking. For pod systems, push the coil into the pod until you feel it click into place.
Step 5: Fill and Wait
Fill the tank or pod with e-liquid, reassemble everything, and wait 5-10 minutes before vaping. Start at a lower wattage than your usual setting and take a few gentle puffs to break in the coil. Gradually increase wattage over the first session. For a full breakdown of common coil problems and fixes, see our complete vape troubleshooting guide.
